Optimizing Energy Management in Data Centers with Setra’s Power Meters

As energy costs continue to climb, energy management has become a critical focus for data centers. These facilities, whether large or small, consume significant amounts of energy, making it imperative to monitor and optimize energy usage. Effective energy management hinges on the availability of detailed energy consumption data, and power meters are essential tools for gathering this feedback.

Electricity is one of the most essential resources that power modern life. As energy demand continues to increase, society must focus on optimizing its usage to minimize waste and lessen the environmental impact. Unlike the 32-bit addresses of IPv4, IPv6 addresses are 128-bits. These longer addresses are partitioned into 16-bit bocks; then, each of these smaller blocks is turned into a 4-digit Hexadecimal number. Built into IPv6 addresses is notation identifying the application it will be used for. The first 64-bits of the address are for routing and the last 64-bits represent the interface or node.

Setra is pleased to announce that the industry’s most versatile power meter just got better!  In addition to the flexible installation, intuitive configuration portal, and unparalleled accuracy, the already versatile communication selections have just been expanded.  All SPM Series power meters now support Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) & supports BACnet addendum 135-2012aj, which covers the BACnet/IPv6 section of the standard.

ASHRAE 90.1 is a standard for measuring energy in commercial buildings. It covers many aspects of energy management, such as total consumption, HVAC and lighting systems, and individual circuits. For buildings over 10,000 square feet, with or without tenants, it is more cost effective to have multi-load, branch circuit, and high-density monitoring equipment. In buildings with tenants, both individual and total building usage need to be monitored every 15 minutes at a minimum and be recorded hourly, daily, monthly, and annually.

IPv6 is the most recent version of the Internet Protocol (IP), the communications protocol that provides an identification and location system for computers. First developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force in the 1990s, IPv6 became a full standard in 2017. However, its spread and usage in the world has not been as fast as anticipated. In 2012, IPv6 was permanently enabled by Internet Service Providers, networking equipment manufacturers, and web companies.

To effectively manage energy consumption and develop plans for cost savings, it is crucial to understand your electric bill. Once you understand your electric bill, you can leverage that information to make changes to electrical consumption and ultimately save money.

Power meters are used in a wide variety of applications to measure electricity use on a more granular level than the main utility meter. Power meters, or submeters as they can sometimes be referred to as, can tell you where, how, and how much electricity is being used in the building.
