Compound Pressure Sensor Basics

What is a compound pressure sensor?

A compound pressure sensor is a device designed to measure both positive and negative pressures relative to atmospheric pressure. This type of sensor is particularly useful in applications where pressure can fluctuate above and below the ambient atmospheric pressure, such as in refrigeration systems or certain laboratory environments.

What does a compound pressure gauge indicate?

A compound pressure gauge indicates both positive and negative (vacuum) pressures relative to atmospheric pressure. This means it can measure pressures above and belove the ambient atmospheric pressure, making it versatile for multiple applications.

What is the difference between compound pressure and absolute pressure?

The main difference between compound pressure and absolute pressure lies in their reference points:

Compound Pressure:

  • Reference Point: Atmospheric pressure.
  • Measurement Range: Measures both positive and negative (vacuum) pressures relative to atmospheric pressure.
  • Applications: Used in systems where pressure can fluctuate above and below atmospheric pressure, such as HVAC systems and leak detection.

Absolute Pressure:

  • Reference Point: Absolute vacuum (zero pressure).
  • Measurement Range: Measures pressure relative to a perfect vacuum, so all measurements are positive.
  • Applications: Used in applications where precise pressure measurement is critical, such as in scientific research and certain industrial processes.

What happens when a pressure sensor fails?

When a pressure sensor fails, it can lead to several issues depending on the type of sensor and its application. The sensor may provide incorrect pressure readings, which can affect the safety and performance of the system it monitors. Systems that rely on accurate sensor data, such as HVAC or refrigeration units, may malfunction. In critical applications like automobile and industrial, failing sensors may pose safety risks by not alerting dangerous pressure levels.  For example, a failing tire pressure sensor can provide inaccurate pressure sensor readings, affecting vehicle handling.
